"Rise Up" is the seventh episode of the fifth season of the ABC series, Grey's Anatomy. It aired on November 6, 2008.
Meredith and Izzie are to assist Erica with a heart patient and Izzie becomes distressed when she realizes who the patient is. It is the heart that she stole for Denny. Also, the patient is in Denny's old room which further distresses her. Izzie's duty during the experimental procedure is to talk the patient through his pain. Erica knows that Izzie can bond with patients, but Izzie sees Denny in the O.R. and loses her ability to breathe. She says sorry and runs out.
Meredith tells of Izzie's connection to Denny, who Erica knew well because she was the surgeon who performed the surgery.
Derek gets annoyed with Cristina after late night talks with Meredith. He can no longer sleep. He asks Mark for a favor which is to have sex with Cristina so he can distract her. After Mark protests, Derek reminds him that he slept with his wife. Mark finally gives in agrees to try it out. Cristina laughs when she realizes that Mark has been trying to flirt with her.
The residents learn that the winner of the skills lab will be allowed to do a solo surgery. George gets placed with "Stan," an annoying robotic patient who can talk about his symptoms. George is successful in saving Stan's life but is confused when he realizes that he was verbally talked down on by Richard, who actually provided Stan's voice. Lexie sees the interns practicing inserting IVs on each other, but she utilizes the unclaimed cadavers in the morgue since they are there for students to learn with. Alex and Cristina find out and want to take the cadavers themselves.
Richard wants Owen's input on who should be awarded the solo surgery since he doesn't have any history with anyone. Owen discloses to Richard that he finds the residents undisciplined and that he is not sure that he wants to stay.
When Miranda finds the room of opened corpses, Lexie says that they were unclaimed but Miranda is upset and says that they owe the corpses respect.
Cristina is sure that Owen hates her after he yells at her about having no decency or respect. If Cristina is practicing medicine to win competitions, then she doesn't belong there. She tells him the reasons as to why she really became a doctor. She sat with her dying father when she was nine years old after a car accident. She felt his heart stop. She insists that that is the reason why she is there.
Erica, angry after finding out the part that Izzie played in acquiring Denny's heart, goes into Richard's office. She demands it be investigated but Richard says to not bring up the past. Erica makes Izzie sit with the patient through another difficult procedure and to take the responsibility she owes. Izzie talks the patient through the pain. When the procedure is completed, she looks and Denny is no longer there.
Erica intends to report Izzie to a medical review board, yet Callie agrees with Izzie. Erica tells Callie that there are no gray areas when it comes to siding with Izzie and there are no gray areas when it comes to being a lesbian. Then she walks away.
